In all the number talks I did for this semester, I showed proficiency in explicitly outlining and naming for my students the expectations and norms for the activity. As shown in this video, I provided both visual and oral representations of these expectations and norms, creating multiple entry points from which my students could fully access and understand them. Even more, through this launch, I was also able to name and touch upon most of the key norms and expectations for number talks. That is, I outlined how I expect my students to put a silent thumbs up when they have the answer, respect their classmates and not interrupt anyone else’s brilliance and use a silent hand signal if they agree or disagree with a classmate. Finally, I tried to norm a growth mindset where my students could embrace their mistakes as spaces of possibility and learning.
