I drew and adapted my formative math task from the Philadelphia curriculum for first grade math. The task was an addition, change-known problem with the objective of my students solving how many blue toy cars Elijah would have if he had seventeen total and eight of them were red toy cars. The math standard aligned with this task was 1.OA.A.1 to use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. Additionally, I also tried to align this task with the math practice standard of carefully formulating explanation for others.
